Šibenik is the capital of the Šibenik and Knin county that has around 152 000 inhabitants in 12 communities, 194 villages and 5 towns. Šibenik has around 55 000 inhabitants. Middle part of the region is divided in two parts with a wide canyon of river Krka and Èikola, and Prukljan Lake with the Channel of Šibenik, but at the same time river Krka was always connecting and integrating the areas of north and middle Dalmatia into a unique region, the Šibenik area.River Krka has a special importance for its potentials and water reserves and for its natural values and touristic attractions.
Sea and coast also have great natural and economic value, where tourism is developed in many villages known for its natural ambient, architectural heritage and diversity of tourist offer.
Climate is Mediterranean with big middle insulation average (2710 hours). Summer temperatures are relatively high but milded by Maestral wind (blows from sea toward land). There are some rains during the winter, but summers are predominantly dry. Coastal vegetation is Mediterranean .Sea is the regions greatest value with coast of 56,2 km measured from point to point, and real length 805,9 km. Biggest river is river Krka that goes through many cascades (Miljacka, Manojlovac, Bilušiæ buk, Roški slap and Skradinski buk).
There are two national parks in the Šibenik region, Krka and Kornati.Town of Šibenik is cultural, educational, administrative and economical center of the region. There are many institutions in the town: County museum- Zupanijski muzej with many sections: Archaeological, Cultural and historical, Ethnographic, Natural and Modern art; Town archive, Town library, Institute for protection of cultural and natural heritage- Section for conservation - Šibenik, Šibenik theatre, International child festival, St. Krševan gallery, Direction of Krka national park, Šibenik chorus " Kolo" (est. in 1899.).There are few towns that have so many profs of their existence like Šibenik- ancient town that used to be surrounded by great wall, town that still stands almost ten centuries, built, destroyed and rebuilt with love of its citizens.
